How the atlas is built.
Every artwork, artist and place in Art de Gaia is backed by research into open cultural collections — and a commitment to doing right by the institutions and artists behind them.
Open access first
Our collection is built on public-domain and open-access material: CC0 and openly licensed works from official museum open-collection programs. Institutions around the world have opened their archives to the public, and Art de Gaia exists partly to honour that generosity by turning those archives into experiences people actually explore.
Rights, tracked at the source
Every image in our database carries its provenance with it: source institution, source link, license and attribution. If something is credited incorrectly or shouldn’t be here, we want to know — contact us and we’ll act quickly.
Our sources
We draw on open collections and APIs from institutions including Europeana, the Smithsonian Institution, and Harvard Art Museums, alongside other museum open-access programs. This list grows with the atlas.
